Hair and Makeup Tips for Wedding Dress Shopping

There is so much to consider when you are buying your wedding dress a few months out before the big day, it can be downright overwhelming. The important thing to remember is to tell a story or create a theme for your day. That carries on and flows over to your beauty theme too. Everything needs to work together synergistically, meaning that your dress, hair, makeup, decorations and so forth are working together to produce the amazing end result…your dream wedding!

That being said I have always advised my clients to make sure they have their hair and makeup trial on the day they go shopping for their wedding gown if possible. You get to see and feel like you will on the day you get married. You will get a visual idea of what works for you and what does not.

Usually, by that time a theme for your wedding has been chosen and you have an idea of what you would like your wedding to be. If making your beauty trial on that day is not an option, make sure your makeup and hair looks on point and pulled together, the very last thing you want to do is stand in front of a mirror in a stunning wedding gown looking disheveled. You also want the option to take photos on your phone so you have access to it to make other decisions.

If you already know you want a sweetheart bodice, then go ahead and wear your hair half up half down leaving some hair falling around your shoulders. If you have your heart set on a higher neckline then, of course, make sure your neckline is uncomplicated by your hair and pin it up or back.

Makeup should, of course, be fresh and polished. Don’t ever roll into a bridal store on a whim because your dream dress just won’t look the same in your eyes (unless you have a great imagination-then go for it!) but most need a visual idea to compare the dress too. You don’t necessarily need your lashes on but do make sure your makeup is a depth that is more than you would normally wear every day. If you are a self-tanner, dress shop a couple of days after your first application of tan, as it would have settled nicely and given you a healthy glow which will make you feel better and look amazing.
