TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROPOSAL!

Our proposal was as low-key as we are! Doug and I had dated since the fall of 2010. During the pandemic, we really solidified our bond and decided that we both wanted to be each other’s “forever bear.”

We’ve both been really busy people for most of our relationship. First, I was pursuing my doctoral degree in molecular biology, then once I graduated, we both were working full time jobs. Doug was also pursuing his music with his original band (he’s a drummer) while I taught group fitness classes (kickboxing) in the evenings after work. We also have a cover band named UltraViolet — or just UV to those who know us, that would have gigs nearly every weekend around Buffalo.

When the pandemic forced us to slow down and stop all our extracurriculars, we really cherished the newfound extra time we had for each other every weekend — and Doug proposed one seemingly regular Saturday morning in September of 2020.

We had been lying in bed for an hour or so cuddling after we woke up, and he couldn’t wait any longer — apparently, the ring was burning a hole in his pocket! He got down on one knee, recited a little poem he had written for me and asked me to marry him.

WHAT WAS THE MOST SPECIAL MEMORY FROM THE DAY?

Everything about our wedding day was special. Our venues were both historic sites in Buffalo, New York— the ceremony took place outside at the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. Our reception took place at the Hotel at the Lafayette in downtown Buffalo, a historical landmark built by America’s first professional female architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune, in 1904.

Our non-religious ceremony was performed by my cousin and was everything we could have hoped for and more — special, funny, witty and totally personalized to us! We had a couple of unique poetry readings and even a surprise reading of some Bee Gees song lyrics!

Our first look moment, our photo sessions before and after the ceremony and limo-ing around Buffalo with our bridal party was a super fun way to spend the first half of the day.

The reception was a blast, as well — being surrounded by our family and friends in such a gorgeous space. One of the most special events of the reception was Doug and I playing a set with our band UltraViolet  —  it’s not every day that the bride and groom are also the wedding band!

Lastly, we snuck away from the reception to do one more photo session in the private courtyard at our reception venue. While I hated to be away from our guests during this time, having a moment with Doug was a dream, and the photos from this turned out beautiful.

DESCRIBE YOUR BRIDAL STYLE. HOW DID YOU WANT TO LOOK ON YOUR WEDDING DAY? TELL US ABOUT YOUR DRESS SHOPPING EXPERIENCE.

My style is not very formal, not very fancy. I like clothing that is comfortable and light. I like wearing things that have an easy, breezy sort of boho feel. Summer is my absolute favorite time, and I wanted a wedding dress that looked appropriate for our summer wedding.

I don’t like traditionally fancy or dressy looks, so I spent time trying to find something that would look beautiful and flattering but that also met all my criteria: no sequins, no beads and no glitter. I knew I wanted a nude dress with ivory lace over it. I didn’t want a plunging neckline or an A-line skirt, but I did want a train.

I was also hoping desperately to find something with my favorite neckline — a crew neck or racer front and a low back.

My wedding dress shopping experience went well — I almost bought the first dress that I tried on at a different shop, but my mom was unable to come along with me. I figured I’d try on dresses elsewhere so my mom and I could have the experience, and then I’d go back and buy that initial dress. Thankfully, that’s not what happened!

While Googling, I came across the All Who Wander jax gown. It met most of my criteria. I quickly searched what bridal shops near me carried All Who Wander gowns, found Bliss Bridal and made an appointment with them.

When we arrived, I asked if they happened to have the All Who Wander jax gown, and through a strange twist of fate, it had actually JUST arrived in store.  I tried it on and ordered it in my size on the spot.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR WEDDING. WHAT WERE YOUR THEME AND COLORS? HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR WEDDING PERSONAL TO YOUR LOVE STORY?

We didn’t have a particular theme or “colors” for our wedding. My bridesmaids wore dresses in “desert rose” chiffon. I wanted a hue that was not too pastel and not too pink. I thought, who doesn’t love a good pinky nude? It is universally flattering and looks summery.

Our decor for the ceremony and reception was mostly greenery. We took advantage of the lush scenery of our ceremony venue, Buffalo Botanical Gardens. Our florist, William’s Florist, created a beautiful greenery and floral arbor for us, as well as greenery aisle markers.

Our place card holders were vintage pressed glass vases with a sprig of white wax flowers in each. The centerpieces were mismatched glass bud vases with greenery and vintage gold taper candles.

Our signage and card box were in gold and glass, and all the signs I made were greenery inspired. Everything coordinated, but nothing matched, creating a true effortlessly boho look.

We made our wedding special and personal in many ways! My cousin wrote and officiated our ceremony for us. Our friend and groomsman, played live for our ceremony processionals and recessionals. Another friend and guitarist from our band was the emcee and DJ and even took video of the day for us.

Our toasts and speeches by our best man, maid of honor and my dad were awesome! We had a signature cocktail that felt very authentic to what we liked — an Old Maid: gin, lime, simple syrup, cucumber and mint.

Our entrance songs were very personal to us, as was our first dance song. As musicians, we did not go traditional for any of the musical elements — we carefully selected songs ourselves for cocktail hour, dinner and the DJ’d music following dinner. And the most personal touch we added was having our band, UltraViolet (UV), play a set at our wedding.

Doug and I formed UV together back in 2012. Music was how we met, and even though we pursue totally unrelated careers — I’m a college biology and chemistry professor — music was something that we’ve always done and still do together.
