What Your Bridesmaids Should Wear to the Rehearsal Dinner

What should your bridesmaids wear to the rehearsal dinner? Believe it or not, this is a question we get asked a lot. And it really depends on a couple of things. Keep in mind you should let your bridesmaids choose what they want to wear to the rehearsal and subsequent dinner and you should be able to trust them to come dressed appropriately for the occasion. But just in case there is any confusion, we are here to help! First, keep in mind the following – in no particular order:

  1. Season
  2. Venue
  3. Semi-formal or casual

Most of the time, rehearsal dinners are pretty casual and most women will show up in a dress combo – either a summer dress with wedges or open-toed strappy sandals or a dress and booties combo in the winter. You never want to wear white or anything too formal, either. A good rule of thumb for someone in the bridal party is to dress like you’re going to a summer wedding.

Most of the time the venue and food serviced don’t come into play unless you’re going to the fanciest restaurant in town. Jeans are usually not appropriate unless stated otherwise and if the bride says it’s ok, try to dress them up with wedges and a cute top! Remember, this dinner is still about celebrating the bride-to-be and her new husband, so dress accordingly.

Sometimes we get asked if a bridesmaid should wear her bridesmaid dress to the rehearsal – the answer is no. The bride is not going to wear her wedding dress so you, as the bridesmaid, do not and should not wear your bridesmaid dress to the rehearsal dinner.

Consider also what is going to happen at the rehearsal when choosing an appropriate outfit. You’ll be rehearsing the actual wedding ceremony so wearing shoes you feel comfortable and confident to walk in is key. At the actual dinner, think about how much time will be spent standing or moving around and remember that whatever you wear needs to be appropriate for the venue. Comfort and style are key!

As far as what colors are appropriate to wear, we suggest steering away from anything white – yes white tops included – and any colors close like cream or ivory. This is the bride’s day and she will most likely be wearing some type of white clothing, as tradition. Black is totally ok to wear to a rehearsal dinner. As this is a semi-formal event black is definitely appropriate. But, when in doubt, just ask the bride what the dress code is.

You don’t necessarily have to get your hair and makeup done for the rehearsal – that part is totally up to you! We suggest keeping your makeup natural and in line with what you wear every day. Remember, lots of pictures will be taken so you’ll want to still look your best without being overdone.

Rehearsal dinners are super fun and an essential part of having a successful wedding. Only the closest friends and family are invited to this special event so dressing appropriately for the situation is important. No matter what, take your cue from the bride and have fun with your style!
