Wedding Makeup: It’s All About the Base

Achieving your perfect modern-day princess wedding makeup and being your most radiant on your special day is a priority.. a girl has to be ready for her close-up, right? Cameras, lights, and well-wishers on your big day mean your wedding makeup needs to be nothing short of perfection. This is your time to shine – it’s your happily ever after!

Always choose your wedding dress first, deciding on the best style and color for you. Then find a wedding hairstyle that will complement the neckline and style of your bridal gown.  Your dress, your makeup, and your hairstyle should reflect your personal style and be uniquely you. This is your day! Making sure your makeup is on point is just as important as choosing your wedding dress or wedding hair.. you want the trifecta –  perfection all round.

This year’s trend for makeup is a fresher face, something more youthful.  For best results, start with a base light in texture. The best foundation sits somewhere between a traditional foundation and the lightness of a tinted moisturizer or BB cream.  If you have blemishes, only apply more concealer to those areas that need it not heavily over your entire face.

Of course for a foundation to look flawless and your complexion clear, you must always clean and make sure your skin is well prepped. You should be exfoliating daily already…  right ladies? Please say you are – EVERYDAY! This gives you the best skin possible so makeup can be applied seamlessly and people will comment how beautiful you are, not how amazing your wedding makeup looks!

I have selected a few of my favourite bases from my kit to help you achieve that flawless finish.  These products will make sure you are ready for your close-up!

For a dry skin try: Mac Face and body or Maybelline Fit Foundation– both of these bases have a wonderful light and moisturizing feel but also a buildable quality to them.

Best drugstore options are: L’Oreal True Match, Maybelline Fit Foundation or Revlon Nearly Naked.  Of course there are others, but I find these to be quite undetectable if applied well with great color selection.

For something more luxe my picks are: Koh Gen Do Moisture or Aqua foundations, Estee Lauder Double Wear light, Giorgio Armani Luminous silk foundation or Diorskin Star –these all strike a perfect balance between matte and a luminous look. They can apply with quite a translucent quality but also be very buildable on the skin if necessary. These are brilliant for high definition filming.

For those lucky enough to have a destination beach wedding or if your big day is in hot humid weather – or even if you have very oily skin – use a water based foundation like Diorskin Nude over an oil mattifying primer.  These bases perform best in extreme temperatures and on oilier skins and give a long lasting natural coverage without an oily residue.

One base I like to travel with is the extremely pigmented Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. This is an incredible 3 in one product!  Mixed with a moisturiser or primer it gives a lovely light and silky application. When you place a little on your brush – without mixing it with any other products –  it doubles as a highly pigmented concealer. If you add some of your loose eye shadow to it, it becomes a fabulous cream eyeshadow or blush. You need to master the application of this product as only the tiniest of amounts is need to be used. Make sure you buff the product out smoothly over the face with small circle strokes – as a little goes a long way.

Great make-up starts with a great base, so do your research first.  Ultimately – regardless of the product you use – choose something that makes you feel fabulous. When you feel fabulous… you look fabulous!
