How To: Volume for Fine Hair

The key to any great hairstyle or being the best tressed is to know your hair and have a stylist that knows it well too! So when you are planning your wedding day we all know too well that the slightest veer away from you know is right can turn out to be a disaster. So many hair concerns can totally be addressed with just knowledge of the right products or even the right cut can help dramatically. I’m often asked about hair and in particular fine hair, what they can do to give the illusion of thicker, fuller hair. Do not despair ladies (and gents) there is a way forward to a lot more va va voom volume without having a major blowout (lol)

You will go from limp to luxurious at home with these tips!

  1. Volumising shampoo and conditioner- make sure you use a fine hair volumizing shampoo and conditioner, the benefits are real. Remember only take the conditioner through at the ends of your hair only, you need lift at the roots so the extra moisture at the roots will not help your cause. Condition every couple of washes.
  2. Wash your hair daily. Oily hair will only add weight to your locks.
  3. The cut is vital. A good hairdresser will know just what you need to add some lift and lightness to your hair. Longer layers are great.
  4. Do not over process your hair. This can cause breakage to fine hair. But a little lightening will add some grip and texture to your fine hair.
  5. ALWAYS start applying any product you use at the ends. NEVER the roots. Make sure you don’t weigh the hair down with too much product though. Less is always more when applying the product to the ends.
  6. Invest in some good products. I love Honest Sea Salt Spray. Bumble and Bumble Dry Spun. Living Proof Dry Shampoo is brilliant for fine hair as it cleans and adds texture.
  7. Add some waves by blowing in the Honest Sea Salt spray and loosely drying your hair upside down. Add some curls and then pull apart for more volume.
  8. Buy a mini root crimper. Clip a small section of hair along your part line as this is the hair that will eventually lie over the crimped sections that give you volume. Crimp close to the roots in small sections. Spritz the crimped section with some dry shampoo and then place the clipped section back over for a smooth effect.
  9. When drying your hair ALWAYS dry it upside down for more lift at the roots.
  10. Dry shampoo is your best friend, not hairspray. Add a spritz after every wash.
  11. Never use a metal brush. Use a boar bristle brush for volume.
  12. Rollers add great volume. Never underestimate a good set! It’s quicker than a curling iron.
