Real Martina Liana Bride: Margalit + Matt

A little rain couldn’t get in the way of Martina Liana bride, Margalit, and her breathtaking Balboa Park nuptials! A romantic day filled with personal touches, Margalit looked positively stunning in her Martina Liana lace wedding dress as she walked down the aisle.

From the bride: Matt proposed to me by taking me on a trip to San Francisco for some “business meetings.” When I arrived, he was waiting for me in the live butterfly exhibit in the conservatory of flowers. I love butterflies and seeing Matt go down on one knee surrounded by butterflies was a dream come true! He had a whole weekend planned out for us after the proposal, including dinner, shopping, and tickets to a band we love.

We live very close to Balboa Park, and knew we had to get married there. When we saw the ballroom at The Prado, we knew we had found our reception space. It is absolutely gorgeous on its own, and has the added bonus of featuring excellent food, drinks, and service. The Prado could not have been more perfect!

For the ceremony, we wanted an outdoor space and were lucky to find the sculpture garden attached to the Museum of Art. Matt and I had always dreamed of an outside wedding. On the morning of the big day, we woke up to a record-breaking thunderstorm and the outside ceremony was canceled. We were extremely fortunate the Museum allowed us to use their beautiful grand lobby as an alternative. Though it wasn’t outside, it was perfect!

I am a crafty person and I knew I wanted to do a lot myself for the wedding. We chose to have a long engagement, about a year-and-a-half, which allowed me the time to do so while working and going to school. These personal touches made the day for me! I had a table setup with wedding pictures from our parents and grandparents weddings that everyone loved. We also included our dog by making him the meal indicator on place cards! We just took pictures of him with different toys to signify the meal. Another personal touch we included was having glass butterflies made. Matt loves glass art, and I love butterflies, so we combined them to create beautiful figures that were at each table. I had a vision of what I wanted the tables to look like, but didn’t have the budget for glamorous rentals. Instead, I went to thrift stores on a weekly basis and collected all the vases and candle holders for the wedding. An alternative to charger plates, we spray painted gold records for each place setting. This gave us the fancy look we wanted and incorporated our love of music as well.

To make things more fun, we had custom drink koozies made up with our names and date as well as the band logo that played at our wedding. To incorporate Matt’s love of spicy peppers, all the men’s boutonnieres featured a pepper in them! Among the other DIY projects, I made ribbon ties for the back rows of chairs at the ceremony and the sweetheart table, not many people noticed, but I loved them. All these things I was able to do myself gave the wedding a personal feel that I will forever take with me!

My most special memory from the day was the first look. Finally getting to see each other after hours of getting ready knowing I was about to marry the man of my dreams is a moment I will never forget! Seeing my fiance before the ceremony helped me relax and enjoy the rest of the celebration.
